Clinical Hypnosis is a drug free, safe and effective therapy which incorporates total relaxation of mind and body under the supervision of a professional therapist. This allows the client to alleviate any unwanted feelings or problems that may affect their everyday lives. Whether you need hypnotherapy for panic stress, hypnotherapy for weight loss or stopping smoking, this is all achieved through by-passing the conscious, critical, analysing mind where a person's will power is stored (willpower that isn't very good at bringing about change), allowing access to the subconscious mind where a person's imagination resides. When this happens, because imagination is far stronger than willpower, the positive suggestions given by your therapist are accepted by you the client; this is what allows hypnotherapy for panic stress, hypnotherapy for weight loss and stop smoking to work.

When I tell people I'm a hypnotist, hypnotherapist, they will often respond with, "You couldn't hypnotize me!". My response to that is: "you are correct, because all hypnosis is 'self hypnosis' and a person will not enter into hypnosis unless they choose to”.

On the other hand, a client with the right mindset, that chooses to enter hypnosis and has the desire for change, will do so very easily, using the power of their imagination to gain access to the subconscious area of the mind, and as long as the suggestions are not against the clients religion or belief system, or against something that the client feels very strongly about, they will normally be accepted by that person and will then be acted upon by the subconscious mind and therefore must happen. This is because the suggestions are programmed into the organic computer in the subconscious (non critical) mind.

Let us talk a little about the way that the mind works. There are two main parts of the mind, the conscious mind and subconscious mind. The conscious part of the mind has four main functions:

The analytical part of the mind: This we must have quite simply because we need to analyze different situations and tasks that we want to complete in our daily lives to keep us safe and out of trouble in everyday situations.

Temporary memory. We must have temporary memory to have a recollection of how to perform our daily tasks.

Willpower: The meek and mild part of a our personality which can give us a quick burst of energy and enthusiasm to complete a task, but becomes less and less effective the more times we use it. We see this in cases of Weight Loss, Slimming or Dieting, or perhaps when a person decides to Stop Smoking. Results can be encouraging initially but over time the will fades and we fail because we haven't altered the programming in the subconscious mind. We either put the weight back on, or (in the case of smoking) we start to smoke again. We all have different experiences of course, but for many this cycle of behavior will be only too recognizable and for some it has become a lifetime pattern of going round in circles getting nowhere.

The rational part of the mind: This part of the mind will always come up with an excuse to explain why we do what we do. We see this happen in people who have tried either to lose weight or give up smoking. We will hear them come up with lots of excuses to justify their condition, excuses that often sound quite convincing, but unfortunately they are all incorrect, the classic example of this being: "I smoke because it relaxes me", nicotine is a stimulant and doesn't relax anyone!

The subconscious mind, where all of our habits, behavior, emotions, imagination and permanent memory reside, holds and stores all information about what we have seen, heard, touched, tasted and smelled from the day that we were born, recording all this information as if it were on an organic computer that is being continually updated on a daily basis. The subconscious part of the mind protects us from situations either real or imagined that it sees as being a threat to our existence. For example: A young boy almost falls off a roof when he is ten years old, the incident is recorded as a trauma in the subconscious mind. Later in life he finds as he is exposed to heights his anxiety increases and compounds in strength until it creates a phobia.

This is where hypnosis comes in, hypnosis is quite simply a tool that is used by a hypnotherapist to bypass the conscious critical factor of the mind and gain access to the subconscious. When this has been achieved, the hypnotherapist will use various techniques or therapies i.e. TFT (Thought Field Therapy) to eradicate the feelings attached to the initial sensitizing event, which allows the subconscious mind to change the pattern of behavior.

It is unfortunate that misconceptions about hypnosis deter a lot of people from seeking help. The common misconception by members of the public that a hypnotist is going to give you a "Mesmer Stare" and poof! every time you hear a certain song on the radio or television you automatically do "The funky chicken!" is ill founded.

Some of the misconceptions about hypnosis:
You are not asleep! You are not unconscious! You are not semiconscious! You do not lose control! Nobody can control you! You can enter hypnosis any time you like! You can exit hypnosis any time you like! You cannot get stuck in hypnosis! If you have secrets they will not come out unless you want them to! Nobody can get you to do something that you do not want to do! You are totally aware of yourself and surroundings at all times! You cannot lose your mind! You cannot become possessed in any way! Anyone can learn hypnosis! Hypnosis is perfectly natural! There is no such thing as a hypnotized feeling! You will not do the funky chicken, unless you want to!

The reality is: Client and therapist, work together as a team to bring about lasting change.

Hypnosis and TFT can help with:
Smoking Cessation: Hypnotherapy is the number one best method to bring about an end to your smoking habit, research shows that when done correctly the success rate is slightly above 66% and when combined with TFT the success rate is much higher. Compare that to the success rates of 5% by trying to quit on your own, 25% by using behavior therapy, or 25% by using Nicotine Replacement Products, I think you'll agree hypnosis combined with TFT looks like the best option out there.

Weight Loss: If you've ever tried dieting to lose weight, then you know that in most cases will power alone is not going to crack it. For the first few weeks, you stick to your plan and the weight loss is impressive, you are going to keep going until you reach your goal, but as time goes on the rate of weight loss slows down (you may even put on a pound or two). Suddenly, it isn't quite as easy to stay motivated. This is where Hypnotherapy and TFT can help by maintaining motivation for weight loss over a long period.

Phobias: Fear of one kind or another can be as debilitating as a physical disability. To not be able to go swimming in the sea with your children because of a fear of water, or shying away from camping out because of a fear of creepy crawlies, can be embarrassing at times and at other times a real annoyance to family and friends. Whatever phobia you may be suffering from, whether it be water, spiders, or flying in an airplane, be assured, hypnotherapy and TFT can and do help.

Confidence: We have all been in a situation where more confidence would have come in very handy, situations from public speaking to just getting up for a dance can often render us immobilized and leave us feeling insecure and foolish. It doesn't have to be that way, hypnosis and TFT have been shown to be very good at overcoming these problems.

Clinical hypnosis is not a miracle cure, although quite often astonishing results occur, but it can and does help where many other treatments and techniques fall short of the mark. On many occasions I have been asked "How many sessions will it take?" My answer to that would be: Some problems such as stopping smoking, confidence building, driving test nerves, phobias, such as: Fear of flying, fear of heights or water, panic attacks and even insomnia can often be resolved in one or two sessions, most other problems should take no more than four sessions to obtain a result, but it is not unheard of to obtain astonishing results even in one or two sessions for complicated multi-layered problems.

Advice for those thinking of trying hypnotherapy and/or Thought Field Therapy:
Make sure that the hypnotherapist is professionally qualified and can show you proof.

Make sure that they have full public liability insurance.

If they are offering home visits "Ask are they also working from an office, and are they full time or part time therapists!

Beware of money back guarantees or therapists saying that they are 85% 90% 95% 100% effective, if they state it ask them to prove it! Hypnosis is approximately between 65% to 70% effective, Thought field Therapy between 82% and 97% effective, ultimately dependent on the skills of the therapist. Personally when I am asked how effective are you? my answer is simply " I get lots of referrals from satisfied clients!"

Last but not least: Nothing is guaranteed in life, and I am aware of the fact that I cannot help everyone although I always strive to do so, on every occasion putting the clients needs first. If I think that there is a need to advise the client to see a specialist who deals with their specific problem, then I will do so! (Although these situations are quite rare)

My interest in Hypnotherapy began ten years ago but was only brought to fruition after being medically discharged from the armed services after serving twelve years, ten of which were in Northern Ireland. I studied at the Northern College of Clinical Hypnosis, and I am dedicated to continued learning in Clinical Hypnosis and in particular to Thought Field Therapy.

A free recording of the session is available dependent upon the problem, at the discretion of the consultant, mr. Ian smith.

For more complex issues needing multiple sessions a price can be negotiated.

The number of sessions required is dependent on the individual, although in most cases 1 to 3 sessions are all that is required.

cancellations or missed appointments: at least 24 hours notice must be given when rescheduling or cancelling an appointment failure to do so will incur a charge for the whole appointment.
